ROW HOUSE
2nd-year architecture project.
Shara Worden, the musician, asked for a row house on a site in Kentucky, facing the Ohio River. The space was designed around her and her family’s specific lifestyles. The building has large open windows facing the river. She always stays in the area for the Fourth of July and asked to create views for the fireworks. Due to houses closely abutting the property on both sides and blocking light, the architecture form is slightly shifted for slits of light to enter on both sides. The central element of the building is the stair zigzagging up through the core. Each floor is then split down the middle to allow an open, but clear separation of space.
Networking goes along with her job, so throughout the house, spaces are devoted to entertaining guests. Art is important to her, so I dedicated the entire second floor to that purpose. There is a large open gallery space to display her or other’s art. I created a space for her piano to be played and for her to have a relaxing view of the water. She also needed separate spaces for her and her child so she could concentrate. The entire third floor is her master suite and study. This leaves the fourth floor for a play place and bedrooms for guests and her son. In addition, there is a balcony for her hobby of gardening. Shara had very specific desires for her house, so the focus of the studio was to design a space to meet all of them in the most appeasing way possible
